What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support service designed for people living with a disability who have higher support needs, helping them live daily life as independently as possible.

SIL participants may require support with a range of various tasks, from personal care and cooking meals to accessing public transport or other informal supports. Whether living in their own home or in shared disability accommodation with other NDIS participants, SIL provides tailored assistance to meet each individual's unique needs.

Supported Independent Living Funding

The NDIS determines funding by assessing a participants level of support and roster of care. Other factors like medical records and talking with participants and primary carer are also considered.

How to Access Funding

To determine funding, the NDIS will use a participants roster of care in combination with conversations with the individual, family, carers and medical or allied health records.

Levels of SIL Supports

SIL funding is divided into three levels based on the required support and the number of residents in the shared setting. The levels are:

  • Lower need – Offers oversight of living arrangements and is typically not available around the clock.
  • Standard need – Provides 24/7 assistance, including hands-on help and/or supervision with most daily tasks, along with overnight stays.
  • Complex need – Delivers frequent and intensive support to manage psycho-social needs, offering consistent positive behaviour reinforcement, ongoing help with all daily activities, and comprehensive care for complex medical needs. This includes 24/7 active support, along with overnight care.

Supported Independent Living Inclusions

  • Care that honours choice and control
